Abstract

Reductions in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions from motor vehicles result in
a substantial decrease of gas-phase VOCs in urban areas. Meanwhile, the relative abundance of consumer and industrial volatile chemical products (VCPs) in VOCs has increased in the past few decades. In Los Angeles, VCPs account for more than half of the petrochemical VOC reactivity with OH radicals, with the contributions from the consumer VCPs being 5 times higher than industrial VCPs. In New York, consumer VCPs, particularly monoterpenes from fragrance products, account for 10 ppb of maximum daily average 8-h ozone (MDA8 O3). VCPs have been shown to have a large ozone formation potential. However, new inventory estimations show that the VCP emissions in Harris County, Texas, are underestimated by 25-50% in the National Emission Inventory (NEI). However, there have been no studies performed in the Greater Houston Area to assess the accuracy of the current emission inventories for consumer VCPs, further limiting our understanding of the impacts of VCPs on air quality, especially O3
