Abstract

A ship-based measurement campaign of offshore oil and gas rigs in the Gulf of Mexico has been funded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) through the Clear Air and Climate Coalition (CACC). This campaign is expected to occur in the late winter/spring of 2021, at the beginning of Houston's ozone season. This project will add an ozone monitor to the ship's instrument list, and support a continuous measurement of ozone in the Gulf of Mexico during the approximately 9-days at sea. Ozone high up in the stratosphere is protective against UV rays, but when it is present at ground-level, it is a pollutant that can cause shortness of breath and other respiratory health problems. The UNEP measurement campaign includes numerous other measurements of trace gases and combustion species: methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and the oxides of nitrogen (NOx). These data will be used as part of this project to compute emission factors of offshore platforms. Emission factors, expressed as a mass of a given compound per kilogram of fuel consumed, are used to better understand the emissions of combustion processes in engines or flares.
